Thousands of Nonprofits Mobilize for National Voter Registration Day

New data show strong public support for nonprofits helping their communities participate, and higher turnout among voters they reach

Boston, MA—In a noisy election year, new data point to a significant role for nonprofits in helping Americans participate. Next Tuesday, September 15, thousands of nonprofits across the country will put that role into practice for National Voter Registration Day, the nation’s largest nonpartisan day of voter registration.

“Nonprofits don’t have to figure out how to reach their communities. They’re already there,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director of National Voter Registration Day. “They’re at the food pantry, the neighborhood clinic, the community center, and the after-school program. National Voter Registration Day gives organizations a chance to say, ‘hey while you’re here, let’s make sure you’re ready to vote too.’”

“The public wants nonprofits playing a role in civic participation. Our polling found 84% of Americans believe nonprofits should help people in their communities understand their voting rights, and more than twice as many Americans say their community would be hurt rather than helped if nonprofits could no longer assist with voter registration,” said a spokesperson for Independent Sector. “That tells us something important about how people see nonprofits: as part of the civic life of their communities.”

“Voter engagement doesn’t have to be complicated. People have practical questions: Am I registered? Where do I vote? What’s on my ballot?” said Jeanette Senecal, chief of Civic Learning and Impact at the League of Women Voters. “When voters get clear answers from known, trusted organizations and resources like VOTE411.org, we help more people feel confident making their voices heard. That’s how we turn information into action and strengthen participation in our democracy.”

“We’ve seen this in the data for years. When nonprofits talk to the people they serve about voting, those voters are 10 percentage points more likely to turn out,” said Brian Miller, Executive Director of Nonprofit VOTE. “The good news is nonprofits don’t have to become something different to have that impact. A food bank can still be a food bank. A health center can still be a health center. They’re simply giving the people they already serve another way to participate in their community.”

On September 15, nonprofits will join thousands of libraries, colleges, election offices, businesses, and community groups across the country for National Voter Registration Day.
