National Voter Registration Day Announces 550,000 New or Updated Registrations as Part of This Year’s Activation
More than 3,500 Community Partners powered the nationwide effort, bringing the holiday’s cumulative total to nearly 7 million new or updated registrations since 2012.
Boston, MA—National Voter Registration Day today announced that its September 15 celebration and related activations resulted in an estimated 550,000 new or updated voter registrations nationwide. That’s an increase of 30% from the 424,000 who registered as part of the holiday ahead of the last midterm election cycle. The results reflect the work of more than 3,500 Community Partners, alongside national organizations and election officials, helping eligible Americans register in every state with voter registration.
Local nonprofits, libraries, community colleges, businesses and community groups made voter registration part of everyday life in communities small and large. Their staff and volunteers answered questions, helped first-time voters register and reminded longtime voters to update their information, regardless of political affiliation.
“There’s been a lot of noise this year about voting and what rules might change. Our partners stayed the course. In communities small and large, in every state with voter registration, they had the conversations and helped people register, regardless of political affiliation,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director for National Voter Registration Day. “That added up to 550,000 new or updated registrations, up from 424,000 in the last midterms. You can feel the momentum. People are saying, ‘We have something to say this year, and we’re going to say it.’”
The national total draws on official data and projections from the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED); official data from TurboVote, VoteAmerica and Rock the Vote; reporting from the campaign’s more than 3,500 Community Partners; and major voter engagement infrastructure partners, including When We All Vote, the League of Women Voters, National Urban League, and the NAACP.
The campaign’s longstanding relationships with the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and NASED are invaluable to this effort. Their connections with state election officials help National Voter Registration Day rally communities and compile a national picture of the holiday’s impact. The U.S. Senate also passed a resolution, unanimously across party lines, recognizing the holiday this year.
Over the nonpartisan holiday’s 15 year history, since 2012, National Voter Registration Day and its partners have helped close to 7 million Americans register or update their voter registration.
This year’s community efforts included Project HOPE, which brought participatory art to 15 community colleges thanks to the support of the Levi Strauss Foundation and Levi Strauss & Co. Major digital platforms helped amplify local outreach, with Google marking the day through a voter-registration-themed Doodle and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) sharing registration reminders. HeadCount’s annual block party brought voter registration to New York City’s Washington Square Park, while voices across sports and entertainment helped encourage participation.
National Voter Registration Day thanks the more than 3,500 Community Partners whose staff and volunteers made these results possible. The campaign also recognizes its more than 140 Premier Partners and gratefully acknowledges its 2026 financial sponsors: Carnegie Corporation of New York, CAA Foundation, Civic Responsibility Project, Google, Levi Strauss & Co., Levi Strauss Foundation, Microsoft, the National Basketball Association, Paramount Skydance Corporation, PayPal, and Snap Inc.
With the midterm elections approaching, the campaign encourages voters to check their registration and make a plan to vote. Registration information and resources are available at NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org.
