National Voter Registration Day 2026 Campaign Kicks Off With Celebration of 250 Years of A Democracy Worth Showing Up For

Thousands of community partners participate each year, helping millions of Americans register or update their information through events, outreach, and trusted local institutions.

Boston, MA – Communities across the country will gather this fall in libraries, campuses, and  community spaces to help neighbors register to vote and prepare for upcoming elections. To support these efforts nationwide, today National Voter Registration Day announced its 2026 celebration and invited organizations across the country to participate in what it expects will be one of its biggest years yet.

Since its launch in 2012, National Voter Registration Day has grown into the country’s largest single-day effort dedicated to voter registration. Thousands of community partners participate each year, helping over 6 million Americans register or update their information since the holiday’s founding through events, outreach, and trusted local institutions.

The 2026 elections will give voters the opportunity to shape decisions at every level of government. Ballots across the country will include all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, 33 U.S. Senate seats, 36 governorships, and more than 6,100 state legislative seats, along with thousands of local offices that influence policies affecting daily life in communities nationwide.

“On September 15, 2026, thousands of partners, new and old, from local libraries and college campuses to national nonprofits and major employers, will join forces to celebrate our democracy and help people get registered to vote,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director for National Voter Registration Day. “Through a coordinated nationwide effort in communities everywhere, both online and face-to-face, we will spend the day raising awareness of voter registration opportunities and helping Americans get ready to participate in elections that affect their everyday lives. This is the one day a year where Fortune 500 companies and election officials join side-by-side with community volunteers, organizations, and individuals in celebration of a single nonpartisan starting point of the democratic process.”

National Voter Registration Day was created as a  nonpartisan rallying point to help eligible voters overcome common barriers to participation, such as missing registration deadlines or not knowing how to update their information after moving. By bringing together election officials and community partners to share accurate information about voter registration and the voting process, the effort helps ensure more Americans are registered and ready to participate in elections.

“Registering to vote is the first step in participating in our democracy,” said Steve Simon, Minnesota Secretary of State and co-chair of the National Voter Registration Day Steering Committee. “Efforts like National Voter Registration Day help ensure voters have access to accurate information and the opportunity to take part in elections that shape their communities.”

“For generations, Americans have trusted the systems that make our elections possible,” said Michael Adams, Kentucky Secretary of State and co-chair of the National Voter Registration Day Steering Committee. “National Voter Registration Day highlights the partnership between election officials and community organizations working together to help voters get registered and ready to participate.”
