About National Voter Registration Day

National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday dedicated to celebrating our democracy. Since its kickoff in 2012, the holiday and its team of thousands of Partners have worked to get over 5 million Americans registered to vote in time for their next trip to the ballot box.

Celebrated each September, National Voter Registration Day involves dedicated Partners of every stripe from all over the country hitting the streets for a single star-spangled awesome day of coordinated field, digital, and media action focused squarely on growing our shared democracy.

The holiday is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), and the National Association of Election Officials (The Election Center).

What is a Partner?

Simply put, Partners are what make National Voter Registration Day’s annual nonpartisan celebration of democracy possible.

-They’re the public libraries, neighborhood food pantries, and human service organizations that set up voter registration tables in their communities on the holiday.

-They’re the college campuses that serve up free pizza, live music, and bouncy houses alongside stacks of voter registration forms.

-They’re everyday individuals who canvass their neighborhoods door-to-door.

-They’re local League of Women Voters chapters, fire departments, animal shelters, Chambers of Commerce and everyone in between who signs up to do the work of turning clipboards and conversations into registered voters every year on the third Tuesday of September.

And we want YOU to to be one of them by filling out the below 2024 Partner form!

Our Team

According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Every year, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise. On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, volunteers and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” in a single day of coordinated field, technology, and media efforts.

  • A coordinated voter registration effort by organizations and volunteers across the country—in communities, workplaces, libraries, college campuses, and more.
  • Hundreds of thousands of voters registering to vote online and offline in a single day.
  • Social media outreach and in-platform activations by digital partners to help voters register to vote online and find registration drives nearby.
  • Saturation of national and local media to raise awareness of voter registration opportunities and encourage civic participation.

What It Has Accomplished

Registering Voters

More than 5 million voters across all 50 states have registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day, including 1.5 million in 2020 alone.

Mobilizing Volunteers

Each year, the holiday’s thousands of partner organizations—about a third of whom are completely new to voter registration—engage upwards of 20,000 volunteers!

Educating Citizens

By leveraging technology and the reach of our partners, we educate Americans about how to register, sign up for election reminders, request mail-in ballots, learn about early voting options, and more.

Uniting Americans

National Voter Registration Day is a day of civic unity. It’s an opportunity to set aside differences; enjoy the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities we all share as Americans; and celebrate our democracy together—e pluribus unum.
