BIGGEST NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY EVER

Record 800,000+ People Registered to Vote Ahead of 2018 Midterms

WASHINGTONLast Tuesday, September 25, marked the largest National Voter Registration Day on record with over 800,000 eligible voters updating their registration or registering for the first time. Much to the surprise of organizers, this massive voter registration drive surpassed the previous record of 771,321 set during the 2016 presidential campaign.

This year, 4,087 partner organizations joined forces with over 10,000 volunteers for a coordinated, nonpartisan day of civic action that included both online voter registration and community registration events in every corner of the country. Some of the major partners this year included Google, Twitter, United Way, League of Women Voters, NALEO Educational Fund, National Urban League, Military Officers Assoc. Of America, Students Learn Students Vote, Facebook, and BET Networks.

Bridget Coyne, Senior Public Policy Manager at Twitter, issued the following statement in response to this year’s record breaking numbers:

“Twitter is committed to promoting increased, informed participation in the 2018 U.S. election, which is why we were proud to support National Voter Registration Day to ensure that every eligible person has the opportunity to get registered. Coordination across tech platforms, media companies, election officials, and nonprofits was particularly strong this year and we feel the day was a success, which was reflected in increased Twitter conversation: This year, the number of Tweets using the official National Voter Registration Day hashtag doubled from two years ago in 2016.”

While the tremendous success of last Tuesday is celebrated by organizers, they also point out that millions of eligible voters remain unregistered with only 34 days remaining until the November elections. Luckily, it’s not too late for these Americans to have their voices heard in the most important midterms in a generation.

“If you missed National Voter Registration Day, don’t worry — you still have time to register,” said Virginia Kase, CEO of League of Women Voters of the United States. “Voter registration deadlines vary by state, but even in the most restrictive states with 30-day deadlines, you can still register to vote until October 7. Don’t wait — make sure to get registered today!”

A comprehensive list of registration deadlines by state can be found here.

Voters can register or update their registration here in about 3 minutes.

National Voter Registration Day is a single, nationwide day of coordinated media and field events to raise awareness of registration opportunities and register as many eligible voters as possible. Held on the fourth Tuesday of every September, it is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State, National Association of State Election Directors, and National Association of Election Officials.
